Things to do in Victoria
Thanks to the warm weather, Victoria is a year-round destination. Outdoor activities, eco-tours, sightseeing, major attractions …are all part of the city’s charm.
Spend half a day at the Royal British Columbia Museum
The museum depicts the humble beginnings of live in British Columbia and focuses on the development of civilizations, people, economy and wildlife. Admission is CAD $21.60 for adults. Children (3-5) can visit for free. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Take a walk in Beacon Hill Park
Located just two blocks from the Inner Harbour in downtown , the park is an oasis of green spaces , excellent for relaxing, walking, jogging or taking time to enjoy a picnic. The park is also ideal for bird watching ; you can see ducks, peacocks and bald eagles.
The Beacon Hill Children’s Farm is a seasonal petting zoo with miniature horses, rabbits and other animals. It’s an excellent option if you travel with children.
See the rose garden in The Butchart Gardens
It is one of the most popular attractions in Victoria. It offers an opportunity to walk among flowers and be dazzled by colors and smells. From late June to September , the Rose Garden is at its best.
Visit the Pacific Undersea Gardens
This is a unique underwater museum , an interactive marine animal museum located in downtown Victoria. It is home to over 5,000 marine animals playing and swimming in their natural habitat.
See the city from above: Craigdarroch Castle
Built in 1889, the castle has 39 rooms. But you are here for something else: climb in the tower for some excellent views of the city and the Pacific Ocean.
Visit the The Fisgard Lighthouse
It is the oldest west coast lighthouse, built in 1860. The original gun batteries are intact and the self guided tour does a good job to take you back in time.
Shop at Trounce Alley
The shops sell unique items and you can find clothes and art. Antique Row is home to antique shops and many galleries.
Eat Chinese food in Chinatown
Victoria is home to the oldest Chinatown in Canada. Needless to say , it’s the best place to try Chinese food. Stop at some shops to pick up unique items, too.
A walk on the beach: Hollydene Beach
Even if you don’t want to get a tan, you can surely spend some time walking on the beach. Plus, this one is located near the University of Victoria but feels miles away from the city.
On the other hand, Willows Beach is the most popular beach in the city and ideal for families with children.
Feel like a giant at Miniature World
Kids and adults alike love to feel like giants in this fantastic 3D world . There are several themes and you can easily spend half a way walking through the buildings. It is open daily except on Christmas Day. Admission is CAD $12 for adults and CAD $8 for children.
Buy a book to take back home
There are many famous bookstores in Victoria and you can spend hours looking for an interesting title to bring back home (and certainly read while you travel).
